Sustainable packaging comes in many forms. Brands typically weigh options based on operational feasibility, supplier availability, and cost. Our data shows that some sustainable packaging features are more compelling to consumers than others, and knowing which ones matter most can help brands make more informed packaging investment decisions.

Brands make packaging decisions based on operational and cost considerations. Consumer motivation deserves an equal seat at the table.

Recyclable materials and reusable or refillable containers are the features most likely to motivate a purchase, at 45% and 43% respectively. A cluster of features follows in the mid-thirties, including minimal packaging, plastic-free packaging, packaging made from recycled content, biodegradable or compostable materials, and clear recycling instructions. Concentrated products trail the field at 24%.

Recyclable materials is the packaging feature most likely to influence a purchase decision.

Looking at which combinations of features make the broadest possible group of consumers more likely to purchase, recyclable materials and reusable or refillable containers together appeal to 61% of consumers. For brands where refillable packaging is operationally challenging, recyclable materials combined with minimal packaging appeals to 59% of consumers. Adding a third feature extends that further, with plastic-free packaging bringing the total to around 70%.

Recyclable materials appear in the top performing combination across every analysis we ran, making it the natural foundation for any sustainable packaging strategy. Concentrated products sit at the other end of the spectrum. They represent one of the most genuinely impactful packaging reductions available in terms of material use and transport emissions, yet they motivate the fewest consumers. That gap is worth noting for any brand investing in concentrated formats.

What's the Takeaway?

Recyclable materials are the packaging feature most likely to influence purchase decisions and the natural starting point for sustainable packaging strategy. When combined with reusable or refillable containers, these two features increase consumer reach significantly. Concentrated products motivate fewer consumers despite their strong environmental credentials, a gap worth factoring into packaging investment decisions.
